Womenspace, a two-hour show from 9-11pm (EDT) on Thursday nights on WFHB Community Radio featuring music by women singer-songwriters and performers of all genres. While technically we play anything from classical to acid rock, my shows tend to be heavily folk/contemporary singer/songwriter oriented, mixed with some jazz, blues and acoustic rock along with occasional poetry and performance pieces. I host the show on alternate weeks. I also program the WFHB Tuesday Am Music Mix I: a two-hour free form acoustic mix show Tuesday mornings from 6-8am (EDT) and Roots For Breakfast, on the 2nd Saturday of each month from 8-10am with a predominantly folk and americana focus.... Due to station policy Cds mailed to me at the station tend not to find me unless I catch them coming in... It features archival audio from two moments in Jackson's history: a 1957 live performance of gospel and spirituals in her adopted hometown of Chicago, and a 1963 interview with her friend, the radio broadcaster Studs Terkel, which covers a wide range of topics including Jackson's experiences of working in the South, the continuing hardships she faced as a Black woman, and the civil rights efforts of her friend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Across eleven tracks, Glorious Mahalia sets these and other new and archival recordings to new compositions. plus audio from a new interview with Martin Luther King Jr.'s speechwriter and lawyer Clarence B. Over a syncopated, minimalist pattern of hand claps and tom-tom thumps, Giddens summons the wide-eyed distress of a child watching an overseer repeatedly rape his enslaved mother. Eventually, the stark, horrified lines she's singing, to which the other three Daughters respond in matter-of-fact unison an octave beneath her voice, relate the fact that the other has stabbed her attacker and is lynched for it. Giddens' vibrato takes on a choked quality as her repetitions of "Mama's flyin' free" transform the observation of death into a terrible but simultaneously liberation-minded chant.
